Honeymoonship

Honeymoonship

by Dustin Sanchez

Marriage is supposed to last forever. For her, it lasted exactly three hours—ending because of her new husband and her maid of honor in the back of a newlywed limo.

Determined to escape the humiliation and reclaim a shred of her life, she flees to the honeymoon destination alone. She needs air. She needs distance. She needs to be anywhere but home.

But when she barely makes her flight, breathless and frazzled, she collapses into her seat only to be greeted by a calm, unfamiliar voice.

"What took you so long, wife?"

She has no idea who he is. Apparently, her bridesmaids did. They booked her a "Rental Husband"—a professional stand-in to keep up the charade while she navigates the wreckage of her marriage.

He is a Korean-Japanese man, an ambitious entrepreneur trying to launch his very own branch of the Rental Family business. But this is his pilot project, his maiden voyage, and he is clearly out of his depth. He is still learning the trade. He is not smooth, not sexy, and not the kind of man she wants with her on her singles honeymoon.

Well, okay, he is kind of sexy.

There are two weeks on the clock and one cardinal rule: Don’t fall in love. But as the script falls apart and they are forced into the intimacy of paradise, they begin to discover that the only thing more dangerous than a fake marriage is the moment the performance starts to feel like the truth.
